Safety Plan for a healthier pregnancy and postpartum experience
Safety Plan for a healthier pregnancy and postpartum experience

Bringing a baby into the world is often described as a joyful and magical time—but for many, it is also a season marked by emotional overwhelm, anxiety, grief, or unexpected mental health challenges. Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are the most common complication of pregnancy and postpartum, affecting 1 in 5 women—and for women of color, that number increases to 1 in 3.

Partners are impacted too, with 1 in 10 men and partners experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety. Despite how common these conditions are, they are often overlooked, misunderstood, and not treated with the urgency they deserve.

The most important thing to know is this: PMADs are 100% treatable. With support, individuals and families not only recover—they rediscover their strength and their ability to thrive. Without treatment, however, PMADs can worsen over time and persist for months or even years. If you or someone you love is struggling, please reach out for help as soon as possible. You are not alone. You are enough. Things can get better.

That’s why it’s essential to have a list of support resources ready before a crisis happens. In moments of emotional overwhelm, it can be hard to remember who to call, where to go, or how to ask for help. Having access to a clear list of trusted hotlines, support groups, and professional services can make it easier to take that first step toward support.

This information is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or mental health care. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact your local emergency services or crisis hotline immediately.

I encourage you to bookmark this page. Even better print this list, save it to your phone, post it on the refrigerator and email or text it to a partner, friend, doula, or provider. Make sure it's easy within reach.
