Birth is often described as a beautiful, life-changing event. Yet, for many, it can also be a source of deep emotional pain and trauma. If you have experienced a difficult or traumatic birth, you might find yourself carrying feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, grief or sadness long after the delivery. Birth trauma can also impact partners who might have felt helpless or powerless during challenging or life-threatening birth experiences. The good news is that healing is always possible, and one powerful and evidenced-based approach to healing is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As a licensed Counselor with over a decade of experience, I have seen the healing impact of this modality. I provide EMDR services for those living in Orlando, Winter Park, Central Florida and throughout the state of Florida through in-person and telehealth services. This blog post will go through understanding birth trauma and how EMDR can support your recovery journey.

Understanding Birth Trauma and Its Impact
Birth trauma is more common than you might think. It can happen due to unexpected complications, emergency interventions such as a c-section, maternal near-miss or NICU, feelings of loss of control, or even the way you were treated during labor and delivery. The emotional aftermath can be overwhelming, affecting your mental health and even your ability to bond with your baby. It is also normal to be in a state of survival that it can take time to even notice the impact of a birth experience.
You might notice symptoms such as:
Flashbacks or intrusive memories of the birth
Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
Avoiding your baby or not allowing others near your baby
Overwhelming grief, irritation or anger at your experience
Heightened anxiety or panic attacks
Avoidance of reminders related to childbirth
Feelings of guilt, shame, or sadness
These reactions are your mind’s way of trying to process an experience that felt unsafe or overwhelming. Recognizing these signs is the first step toward healing.

How EMDR Supports Birth Trauma Recovery
EMDR is a therapeutic technique designed to help your brain process and heal from traumatic memories and help you move forward. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation such as tapping to help your brain reprocess and heal from distressing experiences. Early EMDR treatment soon after birth can reduce the emotional charge attached to those memories, making them less painful and easier to manage. Early intervention is critical in helping trauma from turning into full-blown PTSD.
When you engage in emdr for birth trauma, you are not just talking about your experience—you are actively rewiring how your brain stores and reacts to those memories. This can lead to:
Reduced anxiety and fear related to childbirth memories
Healthier attachment to your baby and others
Feeling safer in your body and thoughts
Improved sleep and decreased nightmares
Greater emotional regulation and resilience
EMDR is a step by step, strategic and client-centered approach. If an appropriate fit and modality for you, Tiffany Lowther, Licensed Mental Health Counselor will guide you at a pace that feels safe and comfortable, ensuring you feel supported throughout the process.
What to Expect During EMDR Therapy
If you decide to explore EMDR therapy, it’s helpful to know what the sessions might look like. Typically, traditional EMDR therapy involves 8 phases:
History and Preparation: Your therapist will learn about your birth experience and current challenges. You’ll also develop coping skills to manage distress during sessions.
Assessment: Together, you identify specific memories or moments related to your birth trauma to target in therapy.
Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, you focus on the traumatic memory while your brain begins to reprocess it.
Installation: Positive beliefs and feelings are strengthened to replace negative ones.
Body Scan: You check for any lingering physical tension or discomfort related to the memory.
Closure and Reevaluation: Each session ends with grounding techniques, and progress is reviewed in following sessions.
The number of sessions varies depending on your unique needs. Many find relief within a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.
Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol for Birth Trauma
A popular Protocol for Birth Trauma often used is Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol . Tiffany is certified in EMDR, trained in this protocol and utilizes it with most pregnant and postpartum clients because of how effective it is in healing. This is a short-term technique that is used to focus solely on the birth story narrative and then go back to any moments that were challenging during the pregnancy until even a year postpartum. This protocol takes typically 2-4 sessions and can be used immediately, if appropriate for the client.
